Explore the California Wine Regions
California’s long and colorful history of winemaking has made it a favorite destination for wine enthusiasts everywhere. Its fruit-filled vineyards, home to over 100 wine grape varieties, produce standout wines for every palate, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc among the most common.
The California Wine Regions
The terroir and geography of the state vary considerably, from cooler coastal areas to warm inland valleys. In California, cool, foggy nights follow hot days, a cycle that lengthens the ripening period and increases flavor intensity, allowing for a wide range of high-quality wines.
California’s 141 federally approved American Viticultural Areas, or AVAs, produce more than 81% of the wine in the United States, with 49 of the state’s 58 counties growing wine grapes. Those AVAs divide into six wine-producing regions:
- North Coast
- Central Coast
- Sierra Foothills
- South Coast
- Far North California
- Inland Valleys
Wine Regions vs. AVAs
A wine region is a grape-growing area within a single administrative boundary, whether a county, state, or country. An AVA, on the other hand, is a delimited wine region distinguished by geographic features like elevation, soil, and climate.
What Makes California Wine Special?
The state’s varied climates allow for the excellent, diverse growing of over 100 wine grape varieties, and each new generation of California winemakers keeps experimenting with styles to create bold, fruit-forward wines. California red wines can age for several years, are medium to full-bodied, and often carry firm tannins, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir among the most famous. White wines range from crisp and citrus-forward to rounder and richer, with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Grigio the most favored. The combination of high-quality grapes and winemaking expertise has made California the fourth-leading wine producer globally, after Spain, France, and Italy.
North Coast
The North Coast hosts more than half of the wineries in the state, with Napa Valley and Sonoma County the most prominent regions. Its popular AVAs include:
- Napa Valley
- Sonoma County
- Lake County
- Los Carneros
- Mendocino County
The most famous North Coast varietals are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.
Central Coast
The Central Coast spans California from Ventura County to the San Francisco Bay Area. Its most famous AVA is Paso Robles, known for its red wines. Other AVAs include:
- Paso Robles
- Santa Barbara County
- Monterey County
- Santa Maria Valley
- Livermore Valley
- San Luis Obispo County
- Santa Cruz Mountains
The most popular Central Coast varieties are Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other Rhône-style wines, along with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and many styles of rosé.
Sierra Foothills
The Sierra Foothills, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in northern California, is an unique and often underrated region, home to more than 100 family-owned wineries that offer friendly, personal experiences. Varietals of renown here include Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Barbera, Syrah, and Viognier, found in areas such as:
- Amador County
- Calaveras County
- El Dorado County
- Mariposa County
South Coast
The South Coast region is the birthplace of wine in the United States. Following the great Spanish expedition along the El Camino Real, missionaries planted grape vines around their mission properties to make ceremonial wine. Though many have since been uprooted, the oldest vine in California still stands at the San Gabriel Mission and produces fruit today. Nearly 50 wineries populate the rolling hills of the region, whose climate suits most varieties well. AJA’s Malibu-based vineyard is proudly part of this region.
Award-winning South Coast varietals include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Pinot Noir, with some of the best wine experiences found in:
- Temecula Valley
- Los Angeles Area
- Malibu
- San Diego County
- Palos Verdes
AJA Vineyards prioritizes giving customers the best wine experience by sourcing from high-quality wine regions in addition to producing our own grapes on the estate. Check out our wines to experience what the South Coast has to offer, wherever you are.
