The Health Benefits of a Glass of Red Wine
I recently had a conversation with my doctor about wine and health, and it turned into a great chat about resveratrol, an antioxidant found in grape skins.
According to the Mayo Clinic, resveratrol is a polyphenol antioxidant that helps protect the lining of the blood vessels in your heart, and it’s been shown to increase HDL, the “good cholesterol,” in your body.
Why Red Wine Has More Resveratrol
Red wines, and some rosés, contain higher resveratrol levels because of how they’re made. Red wine production macerates the grape juice on its skins during fermentation, which extracts color, tannin, and the beneficial compounds locked in those skins. White wine production typically presses the juice off the skins quickly, minimizing skin contact and resulting in lower resveratrol content.
The grape varieties highest in resveratrol are the ones with the thickest skins: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Sirah, and Malbec.
How We Farm and Make Our Wines
Our wines are vegan, mostly organic, and paleo-friendly, with minimal sulfites and minimal residual sugar. We aim for completely dry wines.
My recommendation: work a five ounce glass of red wine into your lifestyle a few times a week.
